How to Crochet a Beanie For Winters

crochet beanie

Winters are here, so I set out to crochet my very first beanie — and I’m excited to share the pattern with you. It’s a super simple design worked entirely in half double crochet and slip stitches, making it fast, fun, and great for beginners. I used an acrylic-wool blend for warmth and comfort, but you can easily substitute your favorite yarn. The beanie fits an average adult, and with measurements included, you can customize the size to make it truly your own.

This beanie is worked flat as a rectangle, with the final rows made in slip stitch to reduce bulk and prevent bunching at the top when gathered. This project can be completed quickly maybe a day or two and can be a very good gift.

Materials

For this project I used lanners sprinkle yarn which is a blend of 75% acylic, 25 % merino and 5% viscose. It is a bulky weight yarn and I used a 5.5 mm crochet hook for this project.

You will also need scissors and tapestry needle.

Pattern

This Pattern uses U.S stitch terms.

work hdc’s in the back loop only

Pattern Begins

Row 1: ch 38 ( 9 inches in length)

Row 2: skip 1 ch and make hdc in the next stitch and continue making hdc’s until you reach the last 3 stitches

in the last 3 stitches make a slst.

Row 3 – Row 38: ch 1 (doesnt count as a stitch) and turn your work now, make hdc in the back loop of the row until you reach the last 3 stitches

Then make slst in the back loop of the last 3 stitches ( This helps to stop the bunching on top of the beanie

The length of the beanie will be almost 21 inches

Join the rectangle to make a beanie

Once your rectangle is complete, fold it so the two short edges line up. Insert your hook through both loops of the first stitch on each edge, yarn over and pull through all loops to create a slip stitch. Continue slip-stitching through both loops of each stitch across the edge, joining the two sides and forming a seamless tube. This turns your flat rectangle into a cylinder, ready for the final top closing and gathering.

This youtube video is a nice demonstration on how to join the beanie.

Now work on the top of the beanie, take a long piece of yarn and choose your side to stitch the top this will be your wrong side. Now pass the thread under each of the ribbed stitchees until you reach the end of the round then pull the yarn to close the top of the beanie.

Weave in the ends to secure the top of the beanie and cut off the excess yarn then flip out the beanie and your project is complete.
