The solid granny square is a charming and deceptively simple crochet motif that builds outward from the center into a seamless, filled-in square. Unlike the classic granny square—with its lacy gaps and clusters—the solid granny square is dense and uniform: each row is worked more or less continuously across the sides, creating a smooth, solid fabric. It’s an ideal building block for blankets, garments, bags, or any project where you want both structure and visual unity.
In this post, I’ll walk you through how to crochet a seamless solid granny square. Prefer to watch instead? You’ll find a detailed tutorial video below.
Materials
You will need yarn, here I am using 100% cotton yarn. A crochet hook, I am working with a 3.5 mm hook. A Scissor and a tapestry needle to weave in ends.
You can use any other type of yarn for example, acrylic.
Pattern
Abbreviations
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
slst – slip stitch
Pattern begins
Round 1: Make a magic ring and chain 3 ( counts ass the first dc). Make 2 dcs in the same ring.
(Ch 2 and make 3 dcs) do this 3 times like you would in a traditional granny square.

At the end of the round make a sc at the top of the ch 3 and close the magic ring.

Now it may look a bit weird but it will get better in the next round
Round 2: Ch 2 and make a dc in the same ch space.
In each of next 3 stitches make dcs.
In the corner make 2 dcs, ch 2 and then 2 dcs.

Repeat the above steps to complete the whole round.
At the end of the round make 2 dcs in the very first space.
make a sc in the top of the ch 2.

From now on its a pattern repeat, crochet on as big as you want the square to be.
After you are done with the square, in the last round ch 2 and make a slipstitch at top of the ch 2 to finish the square. Then weave in that ends securely.
And that’s it — your very own solid granny square! These little blocks are so versatile, that you can use them in blankets, scarfs, clothes and more.
