How to Crochet Houndstooth Stitch + Scarf Pattern

crochet houndstooth

If you love bold, classic patterns, you’re going to love the houndstooth stitch! This fun crochet stitch creates that iconic black and white houndstooth pattern you’ve probably seen in fashion. I first came across this stitch on pinterest and I saw so many beautiful color combinations for this stitch. I used this stitch to crochet my own houndstooth scarf in colors blue and grey to give it more of a unisex look, and I love how it turned out. In this post (and my tutorial video!), I’ll show you exactly how to crochet the houndstooth stitch step-by-step so you can make your own scarf or use the pattern for any project you want.

Materials

For this project you will need 2 balls of 100g yarn (can use any yarn, but I have used a 100% merino wool yarn) and it is by a korean brand.

I have used Im wool 4 yarn in colors, 155 Dark Blue and 168 Dark Mint.

You will also need a hook (I used a 5mm crochet hook with the yarn i mentioned above). scissors and tapestry needle.

Houndstooth Stitch

This tutorial is written using U.S. crochet stitch terminology.

Stitch Multiple

  • Any odd number of chains

Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet

Pattern Instructions

Row 1 (foundation ch) : Ch any odd number of stitches.
For this scarf, I chained 221 stitches, or until the chain measured approximately 50 inches.

Row 2: Turn your work, sc in the 2nd ch from the hook. dc in the next ch

alternate between sc and dc throughout the row

Tip: Make sure you end the row with a dc.

Changing Colors at the End of the Row

To change colors, you will do so on the last dc of the row:

  1. Yarn over and insert hook into the stitch.
  2. Yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).
  3. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops remain on hook).
  4. Drop the first color.
  5. Yarn over with the new color and pull through the remaining 2 loops.

The new color is now your working yarn.

Row 3: With the new color, turn your work and ch 1 (this ch does not count as a stitch). Make a sc in the first stitch, then make a dc in the next stitch. Continue alternating between a single crochet and a double crochet across the row.

Rows 4–12: Repeat Row 2, 3, alternating colors at the end of each row.

Notes

  • Always change colors on the last dc of the row.
  • Keep an even tension to maintain a clean houndstooth look.
  • This stitch pattern creates a dense fabric, making it ideal for scarves, cowls, and blankets.

I worked 12 total rows, alternating colors every row, to complete my sample.

To conclude, this is a perfect stitch if you want to make a gift quickly and looks very classy. If you make something following my video or blog do share pictures in the comments.
