How to Crochet a Beautiful Sunburst Granny Square Pattern

sunburst granny square

I recently learned the sunburst granny square and decided to this step by step tutorail. The sunburst granny square is usually made with different colours for each round to highlight the puff and the bobble stitches. This square is perfect for blankets, pillows, cardigans and anything you can think of.

Materials

For this project you will need yarn I have used Katia Menfis, 100% cotton yarn, 3.5 mm crochet hook, tapestry needle and scissors.

These Squares can also be made using light weight merino yarn or acrylic blends.

Pattern

The Pattern uses US Stitch Terms

abbreviations

ch – chain

dc – double crochet

hdc – half double crochet

tr – treble crochet

slst – slip stitch

Pattern begins

Round 1: Make a magic ring. ch 3 and make 15 more dcs in the same ring.

pull the thread behind the ring to close the magic ring. And make a slst in the first stitch of ch 3.

Total dcs for this round: 16

Round 2: ch 2 and make a puff stitch in the same stitch.

To make a puff stitch

Yarn over (wrap your yarn around your hook).

Insert your hook into the same stitch

Yarn over again and pull up a loop — now you’ll have three loops on your hook.

repeat this 2 more times, you will have 7 loops. Now yarn over and pull through all the loops and this makes your first puff stitch.

Make 15 more puff stitches in each of the stitches. To end the round, slst at the top of the ch 2.

Round 3: To start round 3, ch 3 and we will start with making bobbles

To make a bobble,

Yarn over (wrap your yarn around your hook).

Insert your hook into the stitch

Yarn over again, pull up a loop, then yarn over and pull through two loops — just like starting a double crochet.

Stop here — don’t finish the double crochet yet!

Repeat steps 1–3 two more times in the same stitch. you will have 4 half finished dcs

Now you should have 4 loops on your hook (one for each unfinished dcs plus the starting loop).

Yarn over and pull through all the loops

Then ch 2 and make another bobble in the next stitch.

In total make 16 bobbles one in each stitch. To end the round slst in the top of the ch 3.

Round 4: Now we will work on making this a square.

so ch 4(counts as the first treble crochet) yarn over and make 2 more trebles in the same stitch.

In the next stitch make 3 dcs.

After making 3 dcs, in the next stitch make 3 hdcs.

In the next stitch make 3 dcs.

Now we have reached the corner again so make 3 tr, ch 2 and make 3 tr all in the same space. This makes a corner.

Repeat step 1 – 4 to complete the square.

To finish the square make 3 tr in the very first space and ch 2, make a slst at the top of the ch 4.

Then pull up a nice long loop and cut the yarn and weave ends to complete the square.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and I hope to see you in the next one. Happy Crocheting!
