I’m expecting a baby and decided to sew a baby quilt. This is my first time making one, so please excuse any mistakes in the tutorial. I’ve tried to make the pattern as beginner-friendly as possible because I’m a beginner myself and understand the challenges that come with learning to quilt.
The finished quilt measures 36″ × 48″ and can be used in a variety of ways. For babies, it works well as a tummy-time mat or play mat. As your child grows, it can also be used as a stroller blanket or a cozy blanket for car rides.
Materials/Quilting Supplies
Since the quilt is a simple one I didnt use a rotary cutter or a basting spray (don’t know much about it, but read a bit about it on this reddit link ).
- 2 Contrasting Fabrics (100% Cotton) of your choice each sized 18.5″ x 48″
- Cotton fabric for the back side sized 38″ x 50″
- Cotton Quilt Batting sized 38″ x 50″
- Scissors
- Quilting Ruler sized 15cm x 30cm
- Pins (To keep the quilt in place)
- 3cm Bias Binding (I used 4 meters for the whole quilt)
- Tailor Chalk
Lets Start with the Quilt
Select 2 fabrics of your choice sized 18.5″x 48″ and sew them both with 1/2 inch seam allowance. Now turn the fabric and press the seams with an iron ( A TIP: Press the seams and not drag over the seams for an even look)
cut the batting 38″ x 50″ and place the batting. Place the joined fabric on top of the Batting. Remove any creases on the fabric by Ironing. Then Flip the batting and the front fabric and Add the back fabric approximately same size as the batting. Even out any edges you want but this step can be done later as well.

Add pins and secure the back fabric, the batting and the top fabric. At this point we can also secure fabric witha fabric glue or a basting spray.
Now lets start with the quilting, To do that use tailor chalk and add horizontal lines to your quilt approximately 6.5 inches apart. I did this step on the back side of the fabric. Then using your sewing machine sew lines on the marked lines.

After this step, use a scissor to cut of the excess batting. I know it looks a little wrinkly so at this point I lightly hand washed the quilt to loosen the stitches but this can be done after the whole quilt is completed.
Add Binding
For this quilt I got 4 meters of bias binding and this will be different for a quilt of a different size.
Note: So if you are making a quilt with different dimensions just measure all the dimensions inches and add them then convert it into meters.
To add the bias binding I watched this small short to add the binding at the back. At the end of the binding I used this video to join the binding together.

Thank you for following this tutorial! If you are making a quilt for the first time I hope this Blog post was helpful and If you are searching for a quilt Idea for your baby I hope this post was inspirational.
