Looking for a fun and beginner-friendly project this winter? This crochet plaid scarf pattern has you covered! Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of plaid crochet designs, and I first came across this woven technique on Pinterest about a year ago. I’ve been wanting to make one ever since! I’m making this plaid scarf in black, white, and grey for my husband — and if you’re looking for a thoughtful handmade gift for the winter holidays, this scarf would be perfect.
It’s super easy to make — if you know how to chains and work double crochets, you’re all set. So grab your yarn and hook, and let’s dive in as I walk you through the materials and pattern.
Materials
To make this crochet plaid scarf, I have used a blend of microfibre and acrylic yarn from lanners. This yarn is DK weight. I have used a 3mm hook which is the smallest hook size recommended on the yarn label.
As yarn alternatives, you can use drops karisma or any merino, acrylic dk weight alternative.
You will also need scissors, a measuring table and a tapestry needle
Pattern
This Pattern uses US stitch terms.
abbreviations
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
Pattern Begins
Row 1 : Ch 56. The Pattern multiple for this is multiples of 2 + 6. This means you can ch as wide as you want in multiples of 2 and add 6 ch at the end.
Row 2: In the 6th ch from your hook make a dc. ch 1 skip one ch and make a dc in the next ch.

Repeat this ch 1, skip one and dc throught out the row. At the end of the row you will have 26 boxes.

Row 3: ch 4 and turn your work. ch 1, skip one and make a dc in the dc crochet from the row below. Repeat this for the whole row.
At the end of the row, when workin the last dc, make a dc in ch 3 of the ch 4 from the previous row, to keep the edges straight.

Repeat this row until you reached the desired length, I have made around 120 rows which is about 50 inches long.
The pattern that I have worked is starting with 5 white rows, 2 grey rows, 4 black rows and then 1 grey row.

After completing your scarf, weave in the color changes. And block the scarf at this point, I used my steam iron to do it.
Now we will work on creating the plaid design. To create a plaid design, we will be weaving strands of yarn between the stitches. Measure out the yarn double the size on the scarf length and pass it through the needle so that it is fold in half. Then Start at the edge of one side of the scarf and weave the needle through the spaces.
Remember to leave a few inches about 3-4 inches tail at the start and the end of the scarf, to make tassels.
Note: When weaving the yarn, make sure to alternate the direction in which you insert it for each column. For example, if you start the first column by weaving through the chain spaces from the top, begin the next column from the bottom instead. This alternating pattern helps create an even, balanced weave. (See the image below for reference.)

p.s. I first made the mistake of weaving all the threads in the same direction but then fixed it later on.
The pattern im using for the columns is 8 black ,1 grey, 8 white, 2 grey, 2 white and then finally 5 black.
you can literally use any pattern you want for columns, other than what I have suggested for example another choice could be 8 black, 1 grey, 8 white, 1 grey, and 8 black.
Creating Tassels
After we are done with weaving all the columns we can now make tassels. To make tassles cut out a piece of yarn, about the same size as the hanging tails. Fold the yarn and pull it through the chain space, this forms a loop. Now pull all of the 4 strands through that loop and tighten it.

And thats all for this scarf, I really loved this and showed it to my mom and she really liked it. If you are planning for a handmade gift this christmas or just looking to make something to wear this winter I think this is the perfect scarf. I will probably be making one more of this in different colors.
Until next post, Happy Crocheting.
