Whether you’re digging into your yarn stash to use up scraps or looking to master a foundational crochet piece, the granny square is your perfect starting point. Follow along as I guide you through the easiest pattern.

You will need yarn, here I am using 100% cotton yarn. A crochet hook, I am working with a 3.5 mm hook. A Scissor and a tapestry needle to weave in ends.
You can use any other type of yarn for example, acrylic.

Abbreviations

Pattern begins
Round 1: Make a magic ring and ch 3 ( counts as the first dc ). Make 2 dcs in the same ring.
ch 2 and make 3 dcs in the same ring (makes a corner) and repeat this step 2 more times.

In total you will have 4 granny clusters.
To end the round make a slst at the top of the ch 3.

Round 2: ch 3 (counts as the first dc), and turn your work. make 2 dcs in the same ch space.
In the next ch 2 space ( i.e. the corner) make 3 dcs, ch 2 and 3 dcs all in the same space.

repeat this for the other corner space. In the last ch space make 3 dcs, ch 2 and make a slst at the top of the ch 3.

If you are changing colors like I am then for the next round , I will just end this round with a new colour. To add a new color make a loop and insert your hook in the new color you want to use and pass it through the ch 3 and the current loop as shown in the image

if you prefer another method to change colours you can see this post.
Total Clusters: 8
Round 3: ch 3 and turn your work. make 2 dcs in the same ch space.

In the next ch space make 3 dcs

In the corner spaces i.e. the ch 2 space, make 3 dcs, ch 2 , 3 dcs.

repeat the above 2 steps for the whole round to complete the granny square.
