For a while now, I’ve been wanting to make a crochet mesh tote just for myself — something simple, stylish, and perfect for summer. This design is super beginner-friendly and works up surprisingly quickly. The best part? It looks effortlessly classy and goes with almost any outfit. In this post, I’ll guide you through each step to make your own mesh tote bag, along with a matching pouch to complete the set. Materials
For the tote bag I have used Treccia Mondial in the same color that I have linked. Treccia Mondial is a type of a cord yarn, even though the seperate colors were all part of the same yarn I still used it by seperating each color.
As alternatives you can also use DMC nova vita or any other cord yarn in medium weight. For the tote bag i used a 4mm hook.
For the pouch which also follows the same pattern I have used Casasol in the color cordoba. Casasol is a cotton yarn, which is fine weight and I used a 3mm hook to make the pouch.
Stitch markers and scissors.
Pattern
This pattern uses U.S stitch terms.
Pattern has 2 parts a base and the mesh pattern, but is constructed as a single piece
abbreviations
ch – chain
slst – slipstitch
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
Pattern Begins
Mesh Pouch
Base
Row 1: Ch 36. In the second ch from the hook make a sc crochet. Continue making sc’s for the whole row. At the end of the row make sure you have 35 sc’s
Row 2: At the end of the row ch 1 and turn your work. skip the ch1 and make sc’s in whole row.
Make 10 more rows of sc’s. In total you will have 12 rows.
After you have completed the rows, we will make a sc border around the base.
To make a border, start making sc’s on the verticle side of the base i.e. left side of the stitch marker and continue until you reach where you started from i.e. the stitch marker, in the next stitch make a slst to complete the base.
Mesh Pattern
Round 1: To start the mesh pattern ch 3, this marks as the first dc. Put a stitch market at the top of the ch 3.
Then ch 1, skip 1 ch and make a dc in the next stitch.
Repeat this for the whole row, at the end of the row ch 1 and make a slst at the top of the starting ch 3. This completed the first round.
Round 2: ch 3 (marks as the first dc), make a dc in the dc from the row below.
ch 1, and again make a dc in dc from the previous round. Repeat this step for the whole round.
Round 3 – 10: Make 10 rounds of mesh pattern in total.
After completing 10 rounds flip your pouch inside out.
SC Border
Round 11: ch 1 and put a stitch marker, then make sc’s in all the stitches throughout the round. At the end of the round slst in the ch 1 space.
and repeat Round 11 one more time to complete the pouch.
Mesh Tote
For the mesh tote we will follow exactly the same pattern for the base.
Mesh Pattern
For the mesh pattern, we do 2 rounds of mesh stitches and 1 round of sc and make a total of 25 rounds. After completing the 25 rounds flip your bag inside out.
Straps
Place your stitch markers from where you want to start your strap and where you want to end it. So you will be placing 4 stitch markers for the front and the back.
Start making sc’s in each stitch for the top border. when you encounter the first stitch marker i.e. the pink stitch marker (left image) start making chains. Make 70 chains, connect the chains on the second sm i.e. the green one. Repeat this for the backside as well. At the end of the round make a slst in the very first ch.
Repeat this 2-3 times, until your strap is sturdy and voilaa! your tote bag and pouch are ready.
